12/2/94 Finale 3.0.2 Updater Instructions
Finale 3.0.2 contains a number of minor bug fixes and enhancements over Finale
3.0. The new README.WRI (see MISC302.EXE below) contains a comprehensive list
of the changes.
The Finale 3.0.2 updater contains all the files necessary to update Finale
3.0 to Finale 3.0.2. It consists of two main parts: (1) a patch file which will
update your existing installation of Finale 3.0. This patch will not work unless
you have Finale 3.0 installed already! (2) An archive containing corrections to
a number of templates and a library, as well as an updated README.WRI. This
archive can be extracted whether or not you have the corresponding files
installed.
The updater consists of the following files:
FIN302.EXE -- self extracting archive, containing:
README.1ST -- this file
FIN302.RTP -- the patch file
PATCH.EXE -- the patch program
MISC302.EXE -- self extracting archive containing:
TEMPLATE/BAND/FULLCONC.FTM
TEMPLATE/BAND/JAZZBAND.FTM
TEMPLATE/BAND/MARCHBND.FTM
TEMPLATE/GENERAL/INSTRANS.FTM
TEMPLATE/ORCH/FULLORCH.FTM
TEMPLATE/ORCH/STRQUART.FTM
LIBRARY/INSTR/GENMIDI.LIB
README.WRI
MISC.BAT -- a batch file that simplifies extracting MISC302.EXE
========================================================================
How To Patch Finale 3.0 to Finale 3.0.2:
========================================================================
The patch program PATCH.EXE is a DOS program. You must either exit Windows, or
run it from inside a DOS shell within Windows.
You cannot patch Finale while Finale is running. Exit Finale first.
-- Get to a DOS prompt, either by exiting Windows, or launching a DOS shell. If
you launch a DOS shell, be sure Finale is not running.
-- Copy the files PATCH.EXE and FIN302.RTP into your Finale directory. This
directory is normally called FINALE3.
-- Change to your Finale directory. For example, if Finale was installed in
the directory FINALE3 on drive C:, you should type:
C:
CD \FINALE3
-- Type the following to run the patch program:
PATCH FIN302.RTP
-- The patching operation will take a few minutes to complete. If it completes
without errors, you can delete PATCH.EXE and FIN302.RTP.
-- The patching operation is complete!
A WORD OF EXPLANATION: Patching is a common way to distribute updates to
programs that are already installed. If you have used patches before for
other software, you may notice that FIN302.RTP is considerably larger than
most patch files. The reason for this is that, although Finale 3.0.2 contains
changes that are relatively minor, both Finale 3.0 and Finale 3.0.2 are
compressed programs. This means that the binary images of the programs are
considerably different, even though the changes are relatively minor. It is
perfectly normal for a patch file to be quite large under these circumstances.

How to extract MISC302.EXE:
========================================================================
MISC302.EXE is a self-extracting archive containing an updated README.WRI and
some corrections to templates and libraries. These corrections are described
below.
README.WRI -- contains a comprehensive list of the changes in Finale 3.0.2,
including a number of minor new features
LIBRARY/INSTR/GENMIDI.LIB -- corrects an incorrect channel assignment for
channel 10
TEMPLATE/BAND/FULLCONC.FTM
TEMPLATE/BAND/JAZZBAND.FTM
TEMPLATE/BAND/MARCHBND.FTM
TEMPLATE/GENERAL/INSTRANS.FTM
TEMPLATE/ORCH/FULLORCH.FTM -- corrected transpositions for tenor sax,
piccolo, contra bassoon, and double bass
TEMPLATE/ORCH/STRQUART.FTM -- replaces STRQURT.FTM. Only the name has
changed.
If you have not made any changes to the original templates and library shipped
with Finale 3.0, and if you installed the files in the same directories as
listed above, you can simply extract the changes as follows:
-- Get to a DOS prompt, either by exiting Windows, or launching a DOS shell.
-- Copy the files MISC.BAT and MISC302.EXE into your Finale directory. This
directory is normally called FINALE3.
-- Change to your Finale directory. For example, if Finale was installed in
the directory FINALE3 on drive C:, you should type:
C:
CD \FINALE3
-- Type the following to extract the archive:
MISC
-- The extraction process will extract the files listed above into their
default directories, overwriting the old copies of those files.
-- The extraction operation is complete!
If you made any changes to the library or templates listed, you should rename
those files or copy them to a safe location during the extraction process.
Alternatively, you can run the extracter directly by typing:
MISC302
This will extract all files to the current directory rather than the default
subdirectories. It will ask you before overwriting any existing files of the
same name.

Cleanup
========================================================================
You should save a copy of FIN302.EXE on a floppy or in another location
should you ever need to reinstall Finale. If such a situation arises, you
will need to install Finale 3.0 from your original distribution disks, then
perform the update process again.
After you have completed the update process and saved a copy of FIN302.EXE,
you can delete the following files from your Finale directory:
FIN302.EXE
README.1ST
FIN302.RTP
PATCH.EXE
MISC302.EXE
MISC.BAT
